At Hellevad Børneunivers, there was a desire to focus on improving indoor air quality. Søren Kim Grøn Sørensen, the head of the school, was aware of the negative effects of poor indoor environments but also recognized that installing ventilation systems, especially in older buildings, can be very expensive. Given this, Hellevad Børneunivers became part of a pilot project led by the Children and Youth Administration in Aabenraa Municipality, aimed at enhancing the air quality in classrooms.
As part of this initiative, Hellevad Børneunivers implemented the SKYEN system in their classrooms. Students were given the responsibility to open windows when SKYEN turned red and to close them when it turned blue. This approach led to improvements in the health, learning, and overall well-being of the students.
Søren Kim Grøn Sørensen stated, "We don’t have mechanical ventilation in our classrooms, but we’ve found that by managing air quality through proper ventilation habits, we can reduce CO2 levels to the point where mechanical systems may not be necessary, provided the building allows for it." The results from this approach have shown that a healthier indoor climate can be achieved through simple behavioral changes.
